Luton Town FC are a professional football club based in Luton, Bedfordshire who have joined the Premier League for the first time in their history for the 2023-2024 season.

This will be the first time Luton Town have played in the division, having been relegated from the old First Division in the season before the launch of the Premier League, and subsequently missing out on the inaugural campaign.

The club was founded in 1885 and are curiously known as the Hatters, as a result of the historical association of Luton with the hat making trade. Luton Town was the first club in the south of England to turn professional and joined the Football League for the 1897–98 season, but left in 1900 because of financial concerns, before rejoining in 1920.

The history of Luton Town FC features more financial difficulties and several league promotions and relegations, but they do have one major trophy to their name, having won the League Cup in 1988.

The Hatters were relegated to the fifth tier of English football in 2009, after being punished with a 30 point deduction for financial irregularities. The club then spent five seasons playing non-League football before eventually winning promotion back into the Football League.

Since then, it’s been an incredible success story as Luton were promoted from League Two and League One in successive seasons, before being promoted to the Premier League in 2023. In fact, Luton Town are the first team to return to the top tier of English football after successive relegations down to the fifth tier of English football.

The club have played home matches at Kenilworth Road since 1905 and have a spicy rivalry with Watford Football Club. The stadium has a total capacity of 10,356 and there have been long-standing plans to move to a new stadium, which has become more relevant due to the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

Luton Railway Station is a short 15 minute walk away from the Kenilworth Road ground.
