Newcastle United are an English professional football club located in Newcastle upon Tyne, in the North-East of England. The club nickname is the Magpies, while their fans are also affectionately known as the Toon Army.

The club was created in 1892 when Newcastle East End merged with Newcastle West End to become ‘United’. Newcastle have won 4 League titles, 6 FA Cups and an FA Charity Shield. Based on trophies won, they are the ninth most successful club in England.

Throughout the club’s history, their home ground has been St. James' Park, the oldest and largest football stadium in North East England, and the seventh largest in the Premier League, with a capacity of over 52,000.

Located in the centre of Newcastle, St. James’ Park is one of the most iconic stadiums in the UK. The atmosphere for home matches can be electric and it is one of the best footballing stadiums to visit in the country. The Toon Army are known for being some of the most passionate football fans in the world.

Newcastle United have been a member of the Premier League for all but three years since it’s formation, and as of the 2022-2023 season they have spent an impressive 91 seasons in the top flight of the English Football League.

The Toon Army’s most successful period was between 1904 and 1910, when they won 3 league titles and also the FA Cup. However, their last major domestic trophy was in 1955 so it has been a very long time since they have been able to win a trophy. However, Newcastle fans can be hopeful that there is a major honour coming soon.

In October 2021, a consortium led by the Public Investment Fund, the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia, took over Newcastle United and invested heavily in the team. Despite battling for Premier League survival just 18 months earlier, Newcastle finished in 4th place and qualified for the Champions League in 2023, for the first time in 20 years.

Newcastle have a long-standing rivalry with local rivals Sunderland, with whom they contest the Tyne–Wear derby. This is a strong rivalry between the two clubs with no love lost between them. They also have a minor rivalry with nearby Middlesbrough, dubbed the Tyne-Tees derby.

Getting to St. James’ Park is easy by train and Newcastle Central Station is about half a mile from the ground and a short 10-15 minute walk.
