West Ham United Football Club is an English professional football club in Stratford, East London. Since 2016 the club has played at the London Stadium, having moved from their former home, the Boleyn Ground (also known as Upton Park).

They were originally formed as Thames Ironworks in 1895, before reforming in 1900 as West Ham United. The club moved to the Boleyn Ground soon after and remained there for over 100 years. They are still known as the Irons, or the Hammers, amongst fans and the media.

Up until the 1950s, West Ham were a fairly unremarkable club, albeit with a passionate support. Things started taking a turn for the better when Ted Fenton became club manager and transformed the club's youth school into an integral part of the club's identity. This change in thinking led to West Ham forming a legendary team led by Bobby Moore, who become one of the greatest football stars of his day.

Famously, the World Cup winning England team of 1966 contained three West Ham players, captain Bobby Moore and goalscorers Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters.

Domestically, West Ham have won the FA Cup 3 times and also won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1965, plus recently winning the Europa Conference League in 2023.

They are one of only 8 teams that have never fallen lower than the 2nd tier of English football. The club's highest league position to date came in 1985–86, when they finsihed in 3rd place in the old First Division.

The recent 2022–23 season was a mixed bag for West Ham. Despite fighting against relegation for much of the campaign, the club managed to finish 14th in the Premier League and went on to win the Europa Conference League and claim their first major trophy since 1980, and their first European trophy in 58 years.

West Ham United share some strong rivalries with a few different clubs across London, but none more important than with their oldest rivals, Millwall, which has turned into violence and property damage in the past. However, the Hammers also consider Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea as fierce rivals.

The London Stadium is served by three train stations, each of which are just a 10-15 minute walk away: Stratford, Stratford International and Hackney Wick.
